At a time when the government is planning to introduce the Federal Education Act to ensure equal education for all, government authorities have increased the fees significantly. This has made it clear that the government is feeding private schools.

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has increased the inflation rate by 4.4 percent. However, the metropolis has shocked the parents by increasing the fee by 27 percent. This has imposed a great financial burden on the parents. According to the Metropolitan Education Department (MED), the School Management and Fee Inspection Committee has determined the fee structure for the schools under various grading.

For the academic year 2076, the committee has fixed a maximum fee of Rs 1,630 for primary schools falling under grade ‘D’. Until two years ago, the schools under this grade had the fee structure of Rs 1,181. Similarly, the fees for schools falling under grade ‘B’ ‘C’ and ‘A’ has been fixed at Rs 2,024, Rs 2,418 and Rs 2,812, respectively.

Earlier, the fees for the schools belonging to these categories ranged from Rs 1,575, Rs 1,969 and Rs 2,363 respectively. Furthermore, the committee has determined the fee structure for secondary classes (class six to eight) as Rs 1,901 for grade ‘ D’ schools, Rs 2,351 for grade ‘C’ schools, Rs 2,801 for schools belonging to grade ‘B’ and Rs 3,251 for grade ‘A’. As per the previous detail, the maximum fee structure for all these schools was Rs 1,350, Rs 1,800, Rs 2,250 and Rs 2,700 respectively.

According to the committee, for classes nine and 10, the fee structure has been fixed at Rs 2,537 for schools falling under grade ‘D’, Rs 3,149 for grade ‘C’, Rs 3,762 for grade ‘B’ and Rs 4,373 for grade ‘A’.
